ZERO has
made contributions to sustainable development issues by:
- Creating institutional and professional space for SADC
to participate in sustainable development debate in the
Southern Africa region and globally, e.g. ZERO was
instrumental in the formation of the Southern Regional
Energy NGO Network (SRENN) and is currently giving
technical support to the CBO Network of South Africa.
- Contributing toward a paradigm shift in the environment
debate in SADC through its extensive publications,
networking and advocacy work.
- Promoting mutual capacity building among NGOs on a
number of sustainable development issues through
partnerships, such as mobilising other NGOs to prepare a
regional position at UNCED in 1992 and working with a
number of NGOS in the region.
- Advancing well argued sustainable development options
for rural communities such as renewable energy, more
energy efficient rural industries, improved local natural
resources management and addressing desertification issues
in furthering the livelihood needs of rural communities,
especially those issues affecting women. The rural
industries and the wind energy projects are a good
example.
- Strategic lobbying on environmental policy and decision
making at regional and international levels including
dialogue with conventions on desertification, climate
change and biodiversity. This has been supported by
applied research and deliberate policy lobbying.
- ZERO is currently contributing to the improvement of
livelihoods of rural communities through enhancement of
their capacity to make meaningful contributions to land
policy formulation and implementation.
ZERO has
over the years provided technical assistance to numerous NGOs,
and development agencies in Zimbabwe and the SADC region in
critical areas such as project planning, project proposal
development, policy analysis, institution building and
fund-raising strategies as well as providing resource persons
to various organisations.
Among
the beneficiaries of ZERO’s assistance in this regard have
been the University of Natal’s Community Internship
Programme, the University of Cape town Eco-Programme, the
Organisation of Rural Associations for progress (ORAP),
National Association of Non-Governmental organisations (NANGO)
in Zimbabwe, the Government of Zimbabwe, African Development
Foundation (ADF)-Southern African Region, Climate Action
Network, Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project Trust, Zimbabwe
Environment Trust (ZIMNET), the CBO Network in South Africa.
ZERO has organised numerous workshops with and for other
organisations as part of its capacity building initiatives.
